Tree identification: horse chestnut
Self-tutoring about trees one encounters: the tutor mentions horse chestnut.
Horse chestnut trees are distinct, but can go unnoticed in the corner of a yard or off the main path in a park. They can become quite large. Their leaves widen from the stem, reaching maximum width near the other end, then round off, perhaps to a point. Their flowers grow in upright, conical arrangements that taper toward the top. The horse chestnut flowers I’ve seen are white.
I would have walked by a large horse chestnut tree last weekend without noticing, since it was among other tall trees in a fenced yard. Yet, the scent of its flowers caught my attention. Looking around, I noticed this large tree covered in white, conical flower formations sitting atop its full crop of deep green leaves.
