Tutoring English, vocabulary is always interesting. The tutor mentions detent.

detent: a catch which holds part of a device in place until it is released, intentionally, by a trigger of some kind. The trigger can appear remote from what it affects. Mostly used to describe mechanical devices, this could also refer to a turngate used to stop, then admit, people.
