Weather: the UV index, part 1

Self-tutoring about weather: the tutor mentions the UV index and what “very high” seems to mean thereon.

One hears about the UV index or sees its reading in the weather report. Today, here, it seems forecast to be 8, or very high. Yet, what does that mean?

Apparently, 8-10 is the “very high” category on the UV index. Under such conditions, one should avoid having unprotected skin, since it can become sun-damaged quickly. The recommendation is to avoid being outside from 11am to 4pm if possible. However, if one must be out in the sun, one should cover up with hat, sunglasses, clothing, and sunscreen. Such is my understanding.

Interesting, eh?
