Yard work: dandelions: good for your lawn and yard?

Self-tutoring about lawn care: the tutor begins about dandelions.

For years I’ve pulled dandelions as weeds, but I think I’m stopping that: dandelions, it turns out, are very good for the lawn.

Dandelions can grow in areas of poor soil (which is one reason they can out-compete grass in some areas, as I understand), but they improve it. For one thing, they grow fast, loosening and aerating the soil as their roots penetrate it. Next, the depth of their roots enables them to catch nutrients deep in the soil, then bring them up into the topsoil.

Dandelion flowers attract pollinating insects: if you have a garden or fruit trees, that’s another benefit.

Overall, I think dandelions are worth leaving in the yard:)
