Yard work: rain side effects: silt

Self-tutoring about weather effects during west coast winter: the tutor mentions an interesting side effect of much rain.

Today I was out working on the car in the driveway. It was a dry day, yet I noticed, when I would come inside, that my boots were muddy. How was this happening?

It turned out that that the rain had created a fan of silt around the drain in front of the garage. The silt had dried to a moist mud.

Silt was an important contributor to the fertility of Egypt and Mesopotamia. To my knowledge, it’s a resource to be appreciated when it comes your way. With a plastic shovel I lightly scraped the silt from the driveway and deposited it in one of the landscape patches.
