Zoology: Atlas bear: Africa’s recent bear
Self-tutoring about mammals: the tutor mentions the Atlas bear.
The Atlas bear lived in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, and perhaps further east as well. It was around the size of a black bear, but heavier: 450 pounds may have been a typical mass. Large individuals could be twice as heavy. Similar to other bears, it seems to have foraged for such foods as acorns, grasses, nuts, roots, etc.
The Atlas bear seems to be a victim of humans, having been hunted aggressively in Roman times. It continued to be encountered in the 1800s, with the last known in 1870 in Morocco.
