Geography: distance Alaska to Russia

Self-tutoring about geography: the tutor looks at the Alaska-Russia area.

The Alaska government states the land-to-land distance from Russia to Alaska at about 55 miles (88km). There are a couple of small islands, however, that are only about 2.5 miles (4km) apart. Russia owns one, but the other is Alaskan, and they are connected by ice in winter.

In both countries, these places are so remote that their closeness to each other is a geographical curiosity, but really not more than that.
