Mechanics: limit of three-eighths inch drive tools?

Self-tutoring about mechanics and tools: the tutor mentions a question about drive size.

Years ago I wanted an 18mm socket for a certain repair, and had to buy it separately: the set I had only went to 17mm. The person who helped me asked what drive I was using. Since I didn’t know, he assumed 3/8 inch, which turned out to be correct. I had to buy an adaptor, since the 18mm socket available was 1/2 inch drive.

I’ve wondered, since then, what the torque limit is meant to be on 3/8 inch drive tools. I believe the ratchet I use has experienced around 150 foot pounds without complaint. However, it seems that might be the limit, or even past the limit, that one might expect from 3/8 inch drive tools.
