Mechanics: why (or when) drum brakes may outperform disc brakes, and vice versa
Self-tutoring about mechanics: the tutor looks into some performance differences of drum brakes vs disc brakes.
I’ve always heard disc brakes are better than drum brakes, which is why they replaced them. However, it turns out that drum brakes may be equal, or even better depending on the scenario.
As I understand, the disadvantage of drum brakes is that they can fade after several applications or during long-term braking, while disc brakes don’t. However, as Uncle Tony (I assume) seems to imply in this video, normal driving wouldn’t likely lead to brakes fading. Rather, the most likely scenario that would cause the brakes to fade would be repeated panic stops from high speed. Therefore, for that driving style, disc brakes are likely better. Also, for mountain descent, disc brakes might be superior as well.
On the other hand, drum brakes have the advantage that they offer more surface area for the braking process. Therefore, for normal driving, drum brakes may actually perform better.
