Geography: murder rates

Self-tutoring about world geography: the tutor compares murder rates.

The following is according to my understanding.

A few years back, researching something, I encountered the World Bank website, and was intrigued I hadn’t before. I decided to start using it as a reference, especially since it does keep some interesting statistics.

Today, I came upon the issue of murder rates. I decided to seek an overview from the World Bank, where I noticed a few interesting comparisons.

One idea I’ve heard over the years is that the crime rate is higher in the US than in Canada. Well, the murder rate does seem to be, at 6 per 100,000 in the US, while 2 in Canada. For perspective, it’s apparently 1 in Italy, France, the UK, and China.

On the other hand, the Bahamas and what’s referred to as Caribbean small states seem to figure prominently in this regard.
