Electronics: DVI, part one: what is DVI?

Self-tutoring about technology one encounters: the tutor mentions DVI.

The following is according to my understanding.

Yesterday I was looking at the back of a smart TV, wondering why something didn’t work. It turns out it wasn’t the smart TV’s fault. Nonetheless, such explorations are learning opportunities….

What caught my attention was a port that looked like HDMI, but said DVI beside it. I wondered what that means, so looked it up.

It turns out that DVI means Digital Visual Interface. Apparently it arose in 1999, then became common among monitors and projectors. It seems DVI only delivers video output.

There are adapters from DVI to HDMI, which explains the port on the back of the smart TV. It’s probably labeled DVI to mean that it will only process video information.

Interesting, eh?
