Amphibians of Canada: green frog
Self-tutoring about Canadian amphibians: the tutor mentions the green frog.
The green frog is common in Nova Scotia, where I certainly saw a few. Note that in this case, green frog means a species of frog, not a description, although they are often green.
The green frog has a life cycle I’m a bit surprised to learn. Its tadpoles don’t become frogs until the following year; they spend their first winter still tadpoles. Therefore, they are only found in wetlands that don’t dry up: deep swamps or ponds, or else lakes or along rivers. Perhaps most surprisingly, I’ve read they carry on hibernation beneath the surface of the water as well.
Apparently, the green frog utters single calls that are tenor or bass. My impression is that you tend to hear them only when you’re nearby, whereas some other frogs you can hear from quite some distance.
