Art: value, part0

Self-tutoring about art: the tutor mentions the idea of value.

In art, value is a measure of lightness. Black is least; white, most. However, “lightness” can be explored with any color, and is often done in a monochrome manner.

A common exercise is to lay out a few different values on the page, perhaps in a swatch at the top. Then, something is sketched using only those values. If there are four values, for instance, each part of the sketch can have only one of those. The artist must then compromise, setting regions of the sketch to one of those four even though they may not exactly be any of them.
