Business: what is a gigafactory?

Self-tutoring about new business terms: the tutor mentions gigafactory.

Apparently, gigagfactory is attributed to Elon Musk, who used it to describe the scale of a factory needed to produce batteries for electric cars. (Giga is the metric prefix for billion.) Such a factory might produce battery capacities of billions of Watt-hours per year, for instance. To put that into perspective, my cell phone’s capacity might be 11 Watt-hours.

Gigafactories are talked about in the news these days. Typically they represent billions in investment and produce one or more products involved in the new electricity-centric economy – rechargeable batteries, motors, or even solar panels.
