Chemistry: polypropylene, part1: what is polypropylene?
Self-tutoring about chemistry and materials: the tutor looks into the structure of polypropylene.
I’ve been reading about various materials lately and polypropylene keeps coming up. I became curious of its molecular structure.
Polypropylene’s basic unit, internally, is CH2CH(CH3), with a bond leading from each of the linear carbons to the next unit. Hence, it is sometimes described (C3H6)n, or might also be described as a polymer of C3H6.
Somewhat interestingly, polypropylene is not meant to contain any double bonds, despite its “-ene” ending.
Apparently, polypropylene is also known as PP in some contexts.
