Exercise and fitness: in shape, but fat

Self-tutoring about fitness: the tutor mentions an interesting phenomenon.

I’ve had a lifestyle change lately which involves walking, 15min each way, to an assignment. I could get a ride each way, but I don’t, for fear of getting even fatter.

Simultaneously, I’ve gone on somewhat of a binge the last couple of weeks, eating anything that looks good. I wondered how much weight I would gain in light of the daily exercise I’m getting, five days per week, plus yard work, etc, on the weekends. Yesterday, for instance, working on the car, I was lying on the floor, then walking here or there to get tools, etc. It all adds up, but is it enough?

Today I tried on a pair of pants I could wear two months ago, but not now, it turns out. I also ran 8km today, which went fine, seemingly no worse than when I was 20lbs (9kg) lighter.

I’ve got that “fat but fit” condition that does seem rather ironic. The daily walking to and from my assignment, 15 min each way, up and down hills, etc, is enough to keep me in shape, but not enough to burn what I’ve been eating (which, lately, has been enough to run a battleship, I’m sorry to say).

It seems that, to maintain true thinness, once you’re not young anymore (I haven’t been in 20 years), one needs to both exercise and diet, or else exercise a lot. Yet, to stay healthy, it seems, one doesn’t have to be thin.

However, I’m determined to wear those pants again:)
