Home maintenance: worn-out screw holes

Self-tutoring about home maintenance: the tutor mentions a possible solution for a tired screw hole in wood.

Working on the beloved old gate yesterday, I came face-to-face with a problem I already knew: some of its supporting screws were in tired holes that held vertically, but no longer facilitated tightening of the screws in them.

In some cases I replaced the boards with fresh ones. However, in one case I couldn’t without taking the whole panel apart. What to do?

I decided to drill all the way through the old, tired screw hole, then put a bolt through it instead. God be praised, I was able to find, on hand, a combination of bolt and nut that would fit.

The repair with the bolt seems to have worked.
