Language: what is a ligature?
Self-tutoring about printed language: the tutor mentions the idea of a ligature.
I thought I knew what a ligature is – something to tightly bind something with, such as a rope. Yet, it seems that ligature can have a different meaning in printing.
A ligature in printing, apparently, is a construction of two letters together as one. We don’t seem to have them much in English, but in older texts, æ used to appear: it’s a ligature.
