Lawn care: the tutor continues…

Self-tutoring about lawn care: the tutor relates a story.

I mention in several posts (here, for instance) a connection to the soil and farming. As I point out here, we weren’t farmers, but I grew up around farming, in the Maritimes.

My father generally didn’t espouse the use of chemical fertilizers. Others agree, suggesting they repel earthworms.

Today, buying more dolomite, I noticed a farmer at the till. Near him were bags of fertilizer. I believed he’d have an opinion about using it.

“What do you think about using fertilizer on a lawn?” I asked.

“I fertilize my lawn all the time.”

“What’s your response if people suggest that nitrogen fertilizer scares away earthworms?”

“I’d say bullsh-t,” he replied evenly. “My grandkids dig up worms from the lawn.” He paused. “It may be true some way,” he continued, “but it’s not true in my experience.”

“You’ve taught me something today,” I commented.

A man with such life experience can’t be ignored. I need to look further into the idea of nitrogen fertilizer.
