Math: discount then tax
Tutoring math, everyday problems need easy methods when possible. The tutor mentions one.
Let’s imagine a consumer buys an item with sticker price $44, subject to 15% discount, then 12% tax. What is the final amount they will pay?
One way to navigate this problem is by realizing that a discount of 15% means a resultant “new price” of 85% of the original. Then, tax of 12% means paying 112% of that new price. Since “of” means “multiply,” we have
Final amount paid for item = (44)(0.85)(1.12) = 41.89
