Philosophy: where there’s smoke there’s fire…is that true?

Self-tutoring about common sayings and beliefs: the tutor comments on one.

“Where there’s smoke there’s fire” is a saying I overhear now and then. When I hear it said, the speaker is suggesting that, although nothing may be confirmed, a rumour typically suggests something is afoot.

Yet, I’ve always wondered if “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire” is true. Many times in my life, I’ve heard things that turned out not to be.

However, a person might say, “That exact thing turned out not to be true, but something related was. You just didn’t notice it because you were looking for something too specific.” Perhaps they are right.

I’m not finished thinking about this.
