Retrospect: chocolate bars: Malted Milk

Self-tutoring about people, events, and things from the past: the tutor mentions the famous Malted Milk chocolate bar.

When I was a kid, treats weren’t readily available. I loved chocolate bars, but likely had only about one per week. Halloween was a special time – not only for the costumes and fun, but for the treats.

After Halloween, kids would bring treats in their lunches, which they’d either eat or else trade for what they really wanted. Back then, there were chocolate bars I’ve not seen for decades: one was Neilson’s Malted Milk.

Malted Milk was an uncommon kind of chocolate bar. I think it was most similar to a 3 Musketeers. As I recall, Mars, Kitkat, Caramilk, and Oh Henry were more popular than Malted Milk, yet it had a loyal following. The kids who liked Malted Milk were often a bit different as well – in a cool way.

With its yellow and blue stripes on white, its name in all lower case, and the shot of red that said who made it and what it was, the Malted Milk wrapper was just as memorable as the bar itself. Its wrapper design was way ahead of its time, in my opinion: it looked like a web site you’d see in the 2000s.

In my lifetime, I had less than a dozen Malted Milks, even though I always enjoyed them. For about a decade I stopped buying chocolate bars; when I did again, I no longer saw Malted Milk. It wasn’t the only chocolate bar from my childhood that disappeared from the shelves.

I’ve fond memories of Neilson’s Malted Milk chocolate bars, and of the kids who ate them.
