True crime: Jeffrey Dahmer

Self-tutoring about famous criminal cases: the tutor reflects about an interview of Jeffrey Dahmer.

When I was in my early 20s, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested, which was big news. Serial killer, cannibal, yet very unassuming and even charming, Jeffrey Dahmer’s story shocked the world. Nobody could believe it – perhaps least of all, the people living around him.

Yet, I was still surprised, watching his jailhouse interview from back in ’93. He was calm and (it seemed) totally candid. He had compulsions, he explained, beyond his control, which ruined his life and those of his victims. He put the blame on himself, stating that any other explanation would be “an excuse.”

It’s surprising how normal, and even harmless, a predator can seem. Yet, that’s how they get away with it.

Dahmer was arrested in ’91 and murdered in prison in ’94.
