Woolworths – became Foot Locker?

Self-tutoring about stores and brands: the tutor shares a discovery.

When I was a kid, big places typically had a Woolworths store. I’d call Woolworths a department store; others might call it a variety store. They were big stores, with lots of different sections – a shopper’s haven.

I always thought that Woolworths was Brit, but no: it was Yank, originating in New York and Pennsylvania. Believe it or not, the Woolworth building, New York City, was the tallest office building in the world (60 storeys), 1913-1930.

Foot Locker was a subsidiary of Woolworths from way back in the 80s or earlier. Foot Locker became Woolworths’ most successful part, and in fact, Woolworths eventually renamed itself Foot Locker: today, when you go to Foot Locker, you’re going to what became of Woolworths.

Woolworths continues, by name, as an online retailer, and a few Woolworths department stores are said to remain.
