Mechanics: cork gaskets

Self-tutoring about mechanics: the tutor mentions cork as a gasket material.

A lot of mechanical issues, it seems, might come down to seals and/or gaskets. Hopefully one can buy a replacement, but sometimes one might need to improvise one.

I was asking about gasket material at a shop. They asked me if I wanted rubber, vinyl, or cork. Instantly intrigued, I asked to see the cork. They showed me the cork as well as the rubber and also fibre.

I recall seeing an automotive gasket decades ago that looked like cork. It seems, indeed, it could have been.
