Business, economics: carmakers’ cartel activities earn fine

Self-tutoring about international business: the tutor looks at an alleged cartel.

Apparently, numerous carmakers have been fined by EU antitrust authorities, to an amount of 458million Euros.

The alleged cartel, it seems, involved a mutual agreement among perhaps fifteen carmakers who agreed not to state what percent of new cars were made from recycled materials or the extent to which their cars were recyclable at end of life. Moreover, the agreement, allegedly, included refusing to pay for the final dismantling of the cars. Apparently, in the EU, it’s the carmaker’s responsibility to pay for the recycling of a car.

From the authorities’ point of view, it seems, the fact that the companies cooperated with each other to keep quiet about the recycling details of their cars, as well as to refuse to pay for their dismantling, amounted to cartel-style activity.

Such is my understanding, anyway.
