Driving, Autos and Lifestyle: Winter tires in BC

Self-tutoring about driving: the tutor mentions a fact he’s learned.

Winter tires are required on most BC highways Oct 1 to April 30. Failure to comply can mean a fine.

What follows is my interpretation of the BC driving and transportation map for the South Coast. Look for yourself. From it, I understand that on the Island Highway, from Campbell River south to somewhere around Mill Bay(?), winter tires may not be required. (They are still recommended.) However, you can’t make it from here to Victoria without them: they’re required on the Malahat.

Beware: I’ve heard municipalities can pass local laws necessitating winter tires, so in any given place you might still need them, even if you didn’t need them on the road that led there.

I’m planning to get winter tires put on the van this week:)
