Engineering: dynamo vs alternator

Self-tutoring about electricity generation: the tutor mentions the difference between a dynamo and an alternator.

If one imagines a generator as a motorized piece of equipment that produces electric current, the part of the generator that develops the electric current might be a dynamo or an alternator. If it produces direct current, it’s a dynamo; if alternating, then it’s an alternator.

Typically a dynamo is recognized by the presence of a split ring where the current is collected, while the alternator has two separate rings.
