Exercise and fitness: how to work “the” stair-climber

Tutoring workout equipment? The tutor mentions an impromptu situation.

Let’s play a game. I’m going to talk very specifically about a stair climber, but not tell you where it is. Maybe you use it, maybe not. Possibly, you use one so similar you’ll think I’m talking about it. Even if you never use stair climbers at all, this post might interest you for its story value.

The other day I stepped onto the stair climber at the gym. Someone came up to me: “How do you set that up?” he asked.

His question was natural: when I first used it, I had to figure out how. It’s relatively new, and I’d been used to the one it replaced.

I replied, “I understand why you’d ask. I’m setting it up right now…just watch.” I guided him through the steps, which of course seem obvious when you know them.

“The key is,” I pointed out, “you need to push Enter after each choice. Otherwise, it doesn’t move to the next step.” I’d been surprised about that; perhaps on the old one, you just punched in the choice without needing to press Enter.

Anyway, as I recall, it’s Program Enter Goal Enter Age Enter Weight Enter. Program means one of Interval, Fat Burn, etc; those buttons are bottom left. Goal means one of Time, Calories, etc; those choices are bottom right. Time, Age and Weight you enter from the keypad or using the up or down arrows. Remember to press Enter after each parameter.

I hope this helps you, if you need it. Who knows…maybe I’ll see you at the gym:)
