French: homonyms: espèce, espèces

Self-tutoring about French: the tutor notices a pair of French homonyms.

I’m not even sure if French includes the concept of homonyms. If it does, however, I think it’s got a lot.

I’m not French, but my wife and high-school-aged sons are Francophone. It was suggested by my older son many years ago that I shouldn’t bother trying to keep up, as my effort was “embarrassing.” He told me as much when he was in grade two.

I continue to study French now and again. Being Canadian, I’ve lots of French media to explore. I’ve stumbled upon the words espèce and espèces:

espèce: species (sing.)

espèces: cash

To my knowledge, the terminal -s in the second word shouldn’t change pronunciation.

I’ll be mentioning more about homonyms. They’ve always been a favourite topic:)
