Home computer use: is it safe to open an email?
The tutor digs into a topic that has unnerved him for years.
Once in a while, I get a serious email from an unknown party; of course, it goes to junk. However, I check the junk to decide if any emails within are important. If one seems to be legitimate, I need to know what it says. There starts the anxiety: what if it’s actually infected, but just posing as a good-faith communication?
I know that attachments, if opened, can potentially attack one’s computer. But what about just an email itself, with no attachments? Can it be dangerous to open?
According to Leo of askleo.com, in the context of modern email programs, opening the attachment may not be safe, but opening just the email is. He explains that there was a time when opening just an email was potentially hazardous, but with modern email programs, that problem has been fixed.
I’m really glad I read his article. I’ve visited his site before for other helpful tips.
