Psychology, philosophy: Dr. Les Carter

Self-tutoring about emotional intelligence: the tutor mentions a resource he discovered.

I’m philosophical today, and that’s just how I like to be – open to new ideas, and seeking new truths. So, today I tried something new.

I was watching a programming article on YouTube. When it finished, Dr. Les Carter’s video 12 Phrases Emotionally Intelligent People Don’t Use presented as a choice. I decided to watch it – why not, on such a sunny, beautiful Friday?

Emotional intelligence is a tricky realm, in my opinion. The main reason is that misunderstandings so easily happen. I realize that an emotionally intelligent person knows what to say – they pick up on the cues people send.

Carter points out that people with low emotional intelligence – aka low EQ – empathize minimally and demand a high level of control. Moreover, it’s fear that drives them to be that way. He also points out that a person with high IQ can still have low EQ.

About half the phrases he mentions I hear used commonly. Some are typically said tongue-in-cheek, which probably indicates that he’s right: someone who says them seriously is showing low EQ.

One phrase he brings up is “if you can believe that,” which I’ve heard often, usually about an ironic situation, but not about a person. It certainly was used to refer to the weather when I lived on the east coast:

How was the camping trip?

It was cold when we got there, and snowed the first morning. Next the sun came out…by late afternoon it was baking hot, if you can believe that.

Whether the twelve phrases he mentions resonate with you or not, the video is very enjoyable: Dr. Les Carter is soothing to listen to, and brings up useful points about how we can improve our emotional intelligence and maneuver successfully around those with less. He mentions that people with high EQ are supportive and safe to be around. He suggests, from there, that a reason people are so drawn to dogs may be that dogs commonly can have high EQ.

Thanks, Dr. Carter. I’ll be watching more from you:)
