French: streets and alleys

Self-tutoring about French: the tutor mentions a connection between it and English.

Shoveling the driveway one of numerous times recently, I came to wonder what “driveway” is in French. Curiously, I can’t remember it from the French I learned through grade 12.

I looked it up today, and got the result “allée”. So “driveway” is “allée” in French.

One can’t help but notice the similarity between “allée” and “alley”. Alleys are meant to run perpendicular to streets and be for local access as opposed to passing through. Perhaps those were the first “driveways.”
