Windows 7: the mystery program: part II

Self-tutoring about home computer use: the tutor continues about the program that wants an update.

In yesterday’s post I mention a program on this computer I can’t recall installing, that is requesting an update. I am unaware of anyone’s using it. What to do – uninstall it or update it?

Finding the user who installed it (once again, I mention how in yesterday’s post), I still couldn’t decide the person who did. Perhaps they need it. Nobody would fess up.

In my opinion, people can forget about installing software, since they’re prompted to do so often by presentations that require certain programs to view multimedia, etc. Therefore, just because someone can’t recall installing it, doesn’t mean they don’t depend on it.

I decided to look at which types of files might need the program in question. To do so, I took this pathway from the start screen:

  1. Control Panel
  2. →Programs
  3. →Default Programs
  4. →Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program

The list mentions hundreds of file formats, with the associated programs that work with them. On this PC, there are more than a dozen associated to this program, including many I suspect are proprietary. Protocols? Same story.

I can’t uninstall the program, because I don’t know how often those file formats or protocols present in the lives of some of this PC’s users. Therefore, I updated the software.

The story continues, however: more soon:)
